Project 1 – AngloGold Ashanti

AngloGold Ashanti’s Tropicana Joint Venture (TJV) comprises more than 13,000km2 of tenements stretching along more than 300km of the ancient collision zone between the Yilgarn Craton and the Albany-Fraser Province. The Tropicana Gold Project, located at the northern end of the leases, was discovered in 2005 after AngloGold Ashanti followed up an unexplained gold-in-soil anomaly evident in public domain regional data collected in the 1990s. The region is very remote and no significant gold exploration had been carried out in the project area before AngloGold Ashanti Australia’s efforts. From a geological perspective Tropicana is distinct from the Archaean greenstone-hosted gold deposits in the Yilgarn region and is different to any other gold discoveries in Australia. Work to date indicates the mineralisation is hosted within high-grade gneissic rock and is associated with late biotite and pyrite alteration.

The area is very remote with an arid climate and average daily temperature ranges of 15-45°C in summer and 0-30°C during winter. Rainfall typically comprises scattered showers during winter months and seasonal thunderstorms and cyclone-related events during summer months. The rainfall averages between 150-250mm annually, falling predominantly between December and June.

Bostech Drilling Australia first started drilling at the then Acacia Resources owned Sunrise Dam Gold Prospect in 1997. After AngloGold acquired Acacia Resources in 1999 our relationship has continued to the present day. Bostech has consistently drilled approximately 100,000 metres for AngloGold every year since then, normally with one rig (Rig 4) and some short campaigns with two rigs. The majority of the drilling is remote from the established Tropicana Camp with Bostech providing their own camp facilities.

The drilling at Tropicana is varied in nature from unconsolidated sands and highly abrasive sands to clays and hard silcrete bands. With Bostech’s small rig footprint we are able to comply with AngloGold’s requirement for minimal environmental impact and their policy of “raised blade clearing”. As part of AngloGold’s corporate governance high safety and compliance standards are required of all contractors. Bostech continues to meet these standards year after year.
